Below are samplings of the programs that Medical Care and Outcomes has conducted over the last eight years.

A Collaborative Model for Continuity of Care in Indiana Rural Health Clinics
Mission: To improve healthcare by enhancing patient medication compliance and providing critical information on utilization and outcomes to the healthcare provider.

Abstract: Medical Care and Outcomes, Family Health Services, Hoosier Uplands, and the Indiana Rural Health Association have partnered together to form a Collaborative Model for Continuity of Care in Indiana Rural Health Clinics. This innovative outreach program targets residents of Fayette, Rush, Franklin, Orange and Crawford counties in Indiana, particularly those that are uninsured, those living in poverty, and those with chronic diseases.

Funding Source: Funding for this project is provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Health Resources and Services Administration's Office of Rural Health Policy.

Eli Lilly
  • A mental health intervention program increased medication adherence and persistency by 23% at 10 months.
  • In addition to increased sales, the physicians gained valuable insights into the health status of their patients between office visits. Medical Care and Outcomes identified significant quantitative and qualitative improvements in patients' symptoms and outcomes including decreased utilization in-patient mental health services.
Riverview Hospital primary care physician group (1997-2000)
  • 22.4% of the patients contacted claimed their health status had not improved significantly and 4.5% claimed that their health status had deteriorated. This information was reported back to the physician to which resulted in a change in therapy or having the patient return to be re-seen.
  • An increase in patient's satisfaction with care was noted by the physician.
  • The program received national attention in publications by The American College of Physicians - American Society of Internal Medicine, Doctor-pharmacist collaborations: cure for errors or threat to autonomy? and Unique Opportunities, Doctors and Chemistry for Better Care.
Glaucoma - Indiana University School of Medicine, Merck, and Allergan
  • The programs identified a significant overstatement of patients' reported glaucoma medication compliance rates when compared with objective utilization data. Non-compliance was attributed to the asymptomatic nature of the disease and a lack of education concerning glaucoma.
  • Medical Care and Outcomes presented their findings at The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) conferences in 2002 and 2004.
